How to Look After Your Balayage at Home

Balayage is one of the most popular colour techniques we do here in Gloucester — and for good reason. Done well, it looks natural, grows out beautifully and suits almost everyone. But it does need a little care at home to stay looking its best between appointments.

The longer and more complex the task, the better a good routine protects your investment.

Care Tips

Use a purple or silver shampoo

If your balayage has blonde or light tones, a purple shampoo is your best friend. It neutralises the brassy, yellow tones that appear over time — especially if you spend time outdoors or wash your hair frequently. Use it once or twice a week in place of your regular shampoo. Leave it on for a couple of minutes before rinsing. Do not use it every wash or your hair can start to look dull or slightly purple.

Wash less often

Colour-treated hair loses moisture faster than untreated hair, and frequent washing strips it further. If you can, try to wash every two to three days rather than daily. Dry shampoo is useful for the days in between. When you do wash, use lukewarm water rather than hot — hot water opens the hair cuticle and lets colour fade faster.

Always use heat protection

Straighteners, curling wands and even blow dryers put stress on colour-treated hair. A heat protection spray applied before any heat styling makes a real difference to how long your colour stays vibrant. It also helps prevent breakage, especially on lighter sections which can be more fragile.

Deep condition regularly

A weekly hair mask or deep conditioning treatment keeps colour-treated hair feeling soft and looking healthy. Look for products that mention moisture, repair or colour protection on the label. Apply to mid-lengths and ends — you do not need to put it on your roots. Leave it on for at least five minutes before rinsing.

Protect from the sun

UV rays fade hair colour just like they fade fabric. In summer, wearing a hat or using a UV protection hair product when you are spending time outdoors will help your colour last longer. This applies especially to lighter balayage tones.

Book a toner top-up when needed

Toner is what gives balayage its final, polished look — whether that is a cool ash, a warm caramel or a bright, icy blonde. Toner fades over time, usually after six to ten weeks depending on how often you wash your hair. A toner top-up appointment is much quicker and less expensive than a full balayage, and it keeps your colour looking fresh until your next full session.
