If you have booked a hair colour appointment with us — or are thinking about it — you will have noticed that we ask all new clients to come in for a patch test at least 48 hours beforehand. This is not just a formality. It is there to protect you, and we take it seriously.
A patch test is not a formality — it is the only way to know how your body will react.
What is a patch test?
A patch test is a small amount of the colour product applied to the skin — usually behind the ear or on the inner arm. You leave it on for 45 minutes, then wash it off and monitor the area for 48 hours. If there is no reaction — no redness, itching, swelling or irritation — you are good to go for your colour appointment.
The whole process takes about 15 minutes of your time in the salon. It is free, and it means your colour appointment can go ahead safely.
Why is it required?
Hair colour products contain chemicals — most commonly PPD (para-phenylenediamine) — that can cause allergic reactions in some people. These reactions can range from mild skin irritation to, in rare cases, more serious responses. The only way to know how your body will react is to test it first.
Allergies can also develop over time. Even if you have had your hair coloured many times before with no issues, your body can develop a sensitivity at any point. This is why we ask for a patch test even if you are not a first-time colour client and it has been a while since your last appointment.
Does it apply to all colour services?
Yes — a patch test is required before any service that involves colour applied to the hair or scalp. This includes permanent tints, highlights, balayage and toner. It does not apply to cuts, blow dries or treatments.
What if I react?
If you do have a reaction during the 48-hour window, contact us before your appointment and we will rearrange. Your safety is more important than the booking. In the very rare case of a serious reaction — significant swelling, difficulty breathing, or anything beyond mild skin irritation — seek medical advice straight away.
How do I book a patch test?
Just book it as a separate appointment via Fresha — it is listed as "Consultation / Patch Test" and it is free. Make sure you do it at least 48 hours before your colour appointment. If you are booking both at the same time, just make sure there are two clear days between the patch test and the colour.
