Hair Colour Gone Wrong? How Colour Correction Works

A box dye that came out nothing like the packet. Bright ginger roots after a colour remover. Blonde that turned brassy within weeks. If any of that sounds familiar, you are not alone — colour correction is one of the most common reasons people first come to us here in Gloucester, and almost everything is fixable with the right approach.

First: stop before you make it worse

The biggest mistakes happen in the panic after a colour goes wrong — another box dye over the top, a harsh colour remover, or bleach at home. Every extra chemical process makes the correction harder and puts your hair's condition at risk. If your colour has gone wrong, the best thing you can do is nothing at all until you have spoken to a professional.

What colour correction actually involves

Correction is rarely one single process. Depending on what has happened, it can mean gently lifting old colour, neutralising unwanted tones, filling colour back in before going darker, or rebalancing patchy areas so everything blends. Sonia will assess your hair's history and condition first, then explain exactly what is achievable in one visit — sometimes a full fix takes more than one appointment, and it is better to know that honestly upfront than to over-process your hair chasing an instant result.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

Because every correction is different, appointments can run anywhere from a couple of hours to most of an afternoon, and pricing depends entirely on what your hair needs. The most accurate way to get both is to message us on WhatsApp with a photo of your hair in natural light and a quick note on what has been done to it — you will get an honest answer about what is involved before you book anything.

One thing to remember

If you are new to us, any colour work needs a patch test at least 48 hours before your appointment — it only takes a minute to pop in. You can read more in our patch test guide.
