Gel Nails: How Long They Last and How to Make Them Last Longer

Gel nails are our most popular nail service in Gloucester, and the question we hear most often is the same one every time: how long will they last? The honest answer is that it depends — on your nails, your lifestyle, and how you look after them. Here is what to expect, and how to get the most out of every manicure.

How long do gel nails last?

A well-applied gel manicure typically lasts two to three weeks. By that point most people book in again not because the gel has failed, but because the natural nail has grown and the gap at the base starts to show. If your gels are chipping within the first few days, something is usually wrong — either with the application, or with how the nails are being treated at home.

Why gel nails chip early

The most common culprits are everyday habits: using your nails as tools to open cans and peel labels, long hot baths that soften the gel, and cleaning without gloves. Household cleaning products are particularly tough on gel — a pair of rubber gloves will add days to your manicure. Very oily nail beds and certain medications can also affect how well gel adheres, which is why the same set can last differently on different people.

Simple tips to make them last

Use cuticle oil daily — it keeps the nail and surrounding skin flexible, which helps prevent lifting at the edges. Wear gloves for cleaning and washing up. Avoid picking at the edges if you spot a tiny chip; a small chip can be patched, but a peeled-off corner takes layers of your natural nail with it. And book your next appointment before the gel starts lifting on its own — two to three weeks is the sweet spot.

Removal: the part that matters most

More nail damage comes from bad removal than from the gel itself. Peeling gel off takes the top layer of your natural nail with it, leaving nails thin, rough and weak. Professional removal takes around fifteen minutes — the gel is gently soaked off with acetone, leaving the natural nail intact. If your nails feel weak after years of gel, ask about BIAB, which adds strength while your nails recover.

Gel or BIAB — which should you choose?

If your natural nails are healthy and you mainly want colour and shine, regular gel is perfect. If your nails are weak, bendy or prone to breaking, BIAB will give you the same polished look with far more strength underneath. Not sure? Just ask at your appointment — Madalina will take a look at your nails and recommend honestly. You can read more in our guide to BIAB nails.
