Balayage and highlights are two of the most requested colour services at our Gloucester salon, and plenty of clients arrive not quite sure which one they actually want. They can look similar in photos, but the technique, the result and the upkeep are quite different. Here is a simple breakdown.
Highlights: precise and structured
With traditional highlights, sections of hair are woven out and lightened from root to tip, usually in foils. The result is an even, uniform brightness throughout the hair — beautiful, polished and great if you want a noticeable overall lift in colour. Because the colour starts right at the root, regrowth shows as a visible line, which is why highlights are usually refreshed every six to eight weeks.
Balayage: soft and hand-painted
Balayage is a freehand technique — the colour is painted onto the surface of the hair, lighter towards the ends and softer towards the root. The result is a natural, sun-kissed look with no harsh lines. Because there is no solid root line, balayage grows out gracefully, and many clients go three to four months or more between appointments.
Which one suits you?
If you love a bright, all-over blonde and do not mind regular appointments, highlights will give you that. If you want something lower-maintenance that still brightens your face and adds dimension, balayage is hard to beat. Hair type matters too — balayage shows beautifully on mid-length and longer hair, while highlights can suit shorter styles better. And the two are not mutually exclusive: a few face-framing foils combined with balayage is one of our most popular requests.
What to expect at your appointment
Every colour appointment with Sonia starts with a chat — bring photos of what you like, and be honest about how much upkeep you want. She will tell you what is realistic for your hair in one session and what might take two. One important note for new clients: a patch test is required at least 48 hours before any colour service, so please book that in first. You can read why in our patch test guide.
Looking after your colour
Whichever you choose, the right aftercare makes your colour last noticeably longer — the right shampoo, less heat, and a toner top-up when it starts to soften. We have put together a full guide in our balayage aftercare post, and most of it applies to highlighted hair too.
